Fine Arts

…while the liberal arts are primarily concerned with thinking and piety, with being and doing, the fine and performing arts are directed towards creating and adoring.”

“Classical Education and the Arts of the Beautiful,” Kevin Clark

Music in the Grammar School

The grammar school music department seeks to provide our preschool through fifth-grade students with musical experiences that lead to a delight in music and a sense of community through dancing and singing games, attending group performances in the Kansas City area, and singing at Gaudeamus!, our annual Christmas concert.  Students also develop music literacy skills in weekly music classes during the school day.

Students learn musical literacy through a varied repertoire centered around hymns and folks songs with an emphasis on vocal development.

Grammar school students that take private string instruction outside of class are also provided with opportunities to play in school ensembles for chapels and other events.

Grammar School Strings

At FCA, we believe that beginning instrumental instruction is best accomplished through one-on-one instruction, where the teacher is able to nurture and direct each student’s love of music and teach them to become proficient on their chosen instrument. The private lesson model is combined with opportunities for the musicians to play in ensembles once they have a foundational understanding of their instrument. We also offer private string lessons (violin, viola, and cello). While students are encouraged to begin instruments at the 3rd-grade level, beginning participation is not limited to this grade.

Orchestra

Camerata Oriens, “Rising Ensemble”

Camerata Oriens is our string orchestra comprised of student musicians taking private lessons who are have achieved a high level of proficiency on their instruments. Group rehearsals take place once a week.

Camerata Oriens truly is a rising ensemble. Students have been able to create beautiful music through their dedication and commitment to their art. In addition to regularly providing quality performances, our ensemble received a superior rating and first in their category at the Midwest Christian School Festival (2019).

In December, musicians performed in Gaudeamus!, our school-wide Christmas concert. In the spring, students prepare for Festival and Fine Arts Night. During both semesters there are opportunities to perform at school chapel services, as well as at FCA games.

Vocal Music

Our vocal music department encourages students to use their voices within the context of choral ensembles to create beautiful music to worship God and express the wonders of the human experience in song.  Students are given the opportunity to perform in a number of venues including school sports events, chapels, our annual Christmas concert, and the Midwest Christian School Festival and the Association of Classical Christian Schools Honor Choir.

The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.”

High School

Peek into our high-school studio art class through the eyes of eleventh-grade student, Dominic Heater, who recently tied for first place in the 2020 Association of Classical Christian School’s Blakey Art Contest with his piece entitled, “Dom’s Dodge.”

“Georges Seurat influenced me as a young boy when I studied his painting called A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. When I was learning about how this painting was done with dots, I was intrigued by this style of art and wanted to try it someday. My current art teacher, Mrs. Van Wyk, gave me the opportunity to try stippling this year. This is a form of art similar to pointillism, but it is only done in black and white. I chose to do this car because my grandfather and I restored this rare vehicle together. This is a fond memory for me and I wanted to attempt to draw it using a form of art similar to Georges Seurat’s. We named the car “Dom’s Dodge” because he plans to someday give it to me.”
